Erythrocyte Dysfunction & Amelioration in Hypercholesterolemic Conditions
Coronary heart disease, resulting primarily from elevated blood cholesterol, claims more lives (7.22M) than HIV/AIDS (2.7M). That elevated blood cholesterol leads to impaired transport of life-sustaining molecules: water and CO?/O? into red blood cells (RBC), was demonstrated from Siddhartha’s studies. He discovered that two compounds, the potassium channel inhibitor ‘Glyburide’ and the PLA2 inhibitor ‘ONO-RS-P82’, can ameliorate the detrimental effects of cholesterol on RBC function. The molecular mechanism involved in water and gas transport is further determined from his studies. This new understanding will result in the early diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with elevated blood cholesterol levels.
